HMRC Portal for working from home expenses claims
At least 50,000 taxpayers have used the all-new online portal to claim tax relief for working at home during the pandemic. HMRC revealed this during the epidemic in the first ten days of its operation. The online portal was launched on 1 October and is specially designed in a simple way for users to use it quickly, and it has been set up to process tax relief on the extra expenses for employed workers who have been instructed by the employer to work from home to help curb the spread of coronavirus. Employers have been able to pay a £6 a week tax to cover the extra costs from 6 April 2020 if the employees had to work from home. Employees can directly apply to HMRC if they have not received the working from home expenses from their employer.
How does it work?
Based on the rate at which they pay tax, eligible taxpayers can claim tax relief. For instance, if an employed worker claims a tax relief of £6 a week, then he or she pays a 20% introductory rate of tax. By this, it can be said that they can earn £1.20 a week under the tax relief bracket of paying a 20% initial rate of tax while the higher paying taxpayers can earn £2.40 a week. It could mean that over the course of the entire year, taxpayers can minimize the tax pay either by £62.40 or £124.80.
What do you need to do?
Employees are not required to show any evidence to show their bills have been enhanced unless they are applying for tax relief on costs more than £6 a week flat rate under which evidence regarding the increased costs might be needed. As per HMRC management, it can be said that the majority of tax relief claims are with regards to repairing or replacing tools and branded uniforms, business mileage, and professional subscriptions. The ones that are most likely to claim the tax benefit include healthcare workers, construction industry workers, and those working in the food and retail industry.
Ideally, HMRC is encouraging people working from home to claim tax relief directly through the online portal. HMRC has also revealed some terms and conditions under which it said that agents wouldn’t be able to claim taxes on behalf of their clients, and this is mainly done to make sure clients receive 100% of the tax relief. HMRC has even released a statement that they want everyone to get the money they are entitled to, so the online portal has been made as it is easy to use, and also it takes just a few minutes to make a claim. On approval of the application, the online portal is most likely to adjust the individual’s tax code for the year that is for 2020 to 2021. The tax relief will be given to employees directly through their salary, and they will continue to receive the adjustment till March 2021. The extra money can help a plethora of healthcare workers whose efforts are helping in lives during the Covid19 pandemic.
The tax authority has also said that in 2018 or 2019, more than 5,00,000 taxpayers had applied for tax relief through the agent instead of directly applying it through HMRC.
What reminders has HMRC given?
HMRC is reminding people who are employed, for instance, the healthcare workers and care home staff, they can also claim tax relief based on work-related expenses like cleaning of their uniforms. If employees who clean, replace, or repair uniforms or tools want to confirm if they can avail tax relief or not, they can apply directly to HMRC and check it instantly. Between October 1 and 11, at least 54,800 claims have been submitted through the new portal. Most likely, employees will get tax relief as a lump £6 a week sum amount.
